Population

The U.S. Census data shows the total population for Somerset County of 297,490.

Demographics

Twenty-six percent of the County's total population is non-white. County make-up is as follows: Caucasian 220,584 (74%), Hispanic 25,811 (9%), Asian 26,742 (9%) and African American 23,853 (8%).

USDA SNAP Eligible Families

The total number of SNAP recipients in Somerset County is 3,439. This includes 2,080 adults and 1,359 children.

Somerset County Project

The Somerset County SNAP-Ed project target area includes 2 senior centers in the following towns: Manville, which has a 58% level of poverty in the senior population and South Bound Brook, which has a 57% poverty level in the elderly population.

Non- Duplication of Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Services

This project will not duplicate EFNEP efforts in Somerset County as there is no EFNEP Program in this location.

Project Objectives

To promote the SNAP-Ed Project and its statewide mission to SNAP eligible residents in Somerset County, to increase food security through nutrition education programs to SNAP eligible seniors.

Project Activities

To provide behaviorally-focused, learner-driven, outcome-based nutrition education to the two lowest income senior sites in Somerset County.
